Small Style, Indo Style
Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 8:57PM I won't lie. I've been looking forward to this installment of Small Style for aeons. Because, you guys, could there be anything better than documenting a confluence of Things That I Love (namely my kid, stylish tots, Tea Collection, Indonesia, and batiks?) Okay. Perfection.

Also, I've been looking forward to being reunited with my Small Styling friends. Oh, hey, guys! What's up, we moved to Indonesia. And I love it.
Let's just stop for a moment to talk about Indonesia. I mean, Indo, she she did give me a giant wallop right in the kisser this week, but then Indonesian food is my spirit animal, and there are these flowers, and the fact that there is this light that basically makes everything golden, and oh, did I mention, that literally the week we moved here, my kid finally started sleeping through the night?
So, what I'm saying is there's magic here. And I love it.

Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, I should probably mention that while I was doing this little photoshoot (which lasted all of three minutes, btw) my kid was crying, "iPad? Done cama? Bye bye cama! Wah! iPad!!!" Because I promised her some coveted screen time, and then like the gigantic a-hole that I am, made her stop on the way home for a few snaps. I'm such a jerk.

So, batik. I'm totally obsessed. These prints are made by way of a complicated process of applying wax and dying and removing wax wash rince repeat. They can be bold and mod, or delectate and feminine. And they're lovely. I'm itching to get into the local fabric markets and get exploring. I've already found this little babywearing wonder, which, BTW, I'm still planning to do a tutorial on, I just need a photographer. Ahem, Mr. Chef. What are you doing this weekend?
ANYWAY, not too sure where this mess of a blog post is going. I suppose I should have some sort of conclusion paragraph here or something. So, BATIK! INDONESIA! MY KID! I LOVE THEM! LIFE IS AWESOME. HI SMALL STYLERS, I MISSED YOU!!
The End.

i love batik!!!! i have a few tapestries and just love them. also, loving the fact that i can now see more of indonesia, a place that has always seemed so magical to me and.... the food would be my spirit animal also. indo cuisine is one of my faves.
Stella looks adorable in her dress. worth the bribe.
also, what are native shoes?
Oh...native shoes. I guess you can't really seem them in this post. They're basically glorified hipster corcs. Gah. I hate it. But she loves them. And, as luck would have it, they're available in Jakarta.
I so missed you! {even if I did check in from time to time.} Love the newish blog design : is that the CN Tower I spy? Oh yes, yes it is!
So jealous of your adventures! And I am loving this dress. So pretty.
They're all so grown up. It makes me kinda sad. And happy.
So glad that you and Jakarta are working out your issues.
That's quite a batik cutie you've got there! Hope both of you have a wonderful day in the golden light. xo
Love batik! So fun to make, have you tried yet?
Oh yes, I can see that golden light you talked about- it's just gorgeous! And I love the batik, as well as the sweetie wearing it! And I'm getting you on your school dress woes...Those Indonesian schools- certainly they should understand that you've got a style schedule to keep, right???
Hi, so happy to have found your blog, it's kept me entertained for quite a while :p You're the first person I know who says they love Jakarta - everyone else says they hate it (including me but I've only been there for less than 48 hours so probably not a fair conclusion). Quite refreshing to see it in a positive light. Just don't visit Bali or you'll never want to go back :p
And yes please post a tutorial on the selendang - I see people using them here but have no idea how the baby doesn't drop out when they're not knotted! The Balinese aren't big on slings - there's always a spare grandma around to hold the baby when you need it.
I love your photos! She is so cute and I love her dress! I'm with you, I love dressing my kiddos and taking great pictures to prove it.
I'd love for you to link up to WKWW-What Kids Wore Wednesday Link Party this week at ONE little MOMMA!

@mel awwww, sweets. Thanks so much for the lovely compliment. Really. I'm touched. It's so cool to be back to Small Style after a summer off. I kind a feel like I'm going back to school in september meeitng up with all my friends whom I haven't seen all summer. It's so great!!
I''m using the same ol' camera that I had before a Cannon Rebel 450D. I just have been spending some time practicing photos, and plus being so inspired by life here has opened up a new creative seam or something. Also, the light is just so much better here. I really struggled in Japan because everything was so dark. ANwyay...good to be back. Now heading over your way to see what's up with you!!
