The thing about Jakarta is that everything happens out on the streets. Wander around the lanes and alleys in the late afternoon and a gaggle of children will chase you down and smile for a photo then ask for some coins. You'll pass open sewers, stray cats foraging for abandoned chicken bones, and all manner of commerce. Mothers holding plastic bowls spoon feed their babies congee, shifting slightly when a flatbed truck rambles past. Warrens where dirty kids run barefoot are juxtaposed with majestic houses, their Beemers protected behind high gates.
And in the middle of everything, a lady washing the sidewalk infront of her house.
